For years I've pondered over and over again whether I shouldn't dare to switch to another operating system. When the offspring then tended towards the bitten apple, I resisted - yet another solution that nails me to hardware and software, cut off, proprietary.
Then came the big G and the question: How much G is in Android? In any case too much for me, above all the curiosity is no less than with Windose.
And so it seems to me that switching to Linux is the only alternative. I watched the whole thing again and again, but could never really decide. Too many programs I use live in the windose world, start over? Looking for a suitable replacement? In my age? Ufff!
Up until Win7 there wasn't really a real need either, it worked, also well, a change would have been a 'luxury', Win10 was more demanding and brought the topic back into focus, but not quite as seriously.
But now it is concrete, with the forced switch to Win11 and the restrictions regarding the required hardware, the purchase of several computers and laptops would be necessary because they cannot meet the requirements.
So now I've actually flattened an older Lenovo MXII with 2 GB Tam and 64 GB SSD and let myself go on Linux.
I tried three Linuxes, Linux Mint 20.3, then Ubuntu 21.04 and also Kubuntu in the same version.
The trade journals recommended the 'Mint' for those switching, so I started with that. The installation went smoothly, even if I installed the dealer version by mistake. The disadvantage is that a corresponding administrator is created, so the actual administrator had to be set up separately. But no problem, went well. After a short time, however, it turned out that the (window) shares in the home network were not working as I had expected - subsequent installation of packages, setting them up, difficult!
OK, new stick, new luck - it was Ubuntu's turn, actually!. But despite several attempts it didn't work, endless waiting and then finally a termination - I didn't want to do that, I still don't know why it didn't work. So back to Linux Mint?
Shortly before the gate closed then the advice on Kubuntu, what the heck it's worth a try, so flattened the stick and the laptop again and off we went.
And lo and behold, the installation went through, the first settings were successful, I was able to connect immediately with my Windows shares, everything is up to date in the green area.
And it runs reasonably smoothly! And it looks like my windose right now! Now the program tests begin!
